Currency Project

This speculative currency redesign reimagines the Ghanaian cedi as a contemporary cultural artifact rather than a purely functional object. The project explores how national currency can communicate identity, history, and values through intentional graphic design, typography, and visual storytelling.

Drawing inspiration from Ghanaian symbolism, textiles, architecture, and rhythms of everyday exchange, the redesigned notes and coins balance modern clarity with cultural depth. Patterns reference Adinkra philosophy, color systems echo regional landscapes, and typographic choices emphasize legibility while honoring local visual traditions. Portraiture and iconography shift away from static monumentality toward narratives of collective labor, innovation, and resilience.

The project treats currency as a designed system—considering hierarchy, security features, modular layouts, and accessibility—while questioning who is represented and how value is visually constructed. By remodeling the cedi through a contemporary design lens, this work proposes a future-facing national currency that reflects Ghana’s global presence, economic ambition, and living culture.
